Lockdown doesn’t stop local marathon brothers

Lewis and Jordan SilverRestrictions in place around COVID-19 didn’t stop local runners and brothers Jordan and Lewis Silver from completing a full marathon, and what’s more they didn’t break any of the rules in doing so, and made £4,000 to support NHS staff in West Hertfordshire to boot.

Starting at their respective back doors, the pair completed the full 26.2 miles by running round and round their gardens. The incredible (and probably dizzying) feat was recorded here using Jordan’s tracker which clearly proves the achievement.

Jordan's trackThe two runners were inspired by the achievement and spirit of Captain Tom Moore’s walk for the NHS. Jordan has been receiving care from the diabetic team at Watford General Hospital and the brothers wanted to show their gratitude to all NHS staff at the Trust, by raising funds for the COVID-19 response. A total of £4,000 was donated by friends, colleagues and family and contributions can still be made at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/gardenrunforthenhs-jordansilver.

We haven’t heard anything from the brothers about any rivalry between them, but we can report that Jordan was the quicker of the two at 5h 7m, and Lewis, after struggling with an injury, came in at 6h 30m.

Sofia Sheikh, Charity Director at Raise, said “What an amazing thing to have done, at a time when marathons and other big fundraising events that the charity sector rely on have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely. I’m so impressed”.

The event was also described by the Trust’s Diabetes Service Clinical Lead Maggie Carroll as ” … truly inspirational …”.

Funds raised by Lewis and Jordan will go to the Raise West Herts COVID-19 Response Appeal which is intended to support staff at the three West Herts hospitals in Watford, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.

The money will be used to provide sustenance, welfare items, equipment, furniture and fittings in staff areas, and much more, to address both short term needs and the longer term impact of the emergency on staff.
