Greater London Tamil Sangam made their 2020 Chithirai Thiruvizha event a virtual one, at the same time raising money for our COVID-19 response fund.
Chithirai Thiruvizha is a colourful celebration during the Tamil month of Chithirai. It marks the coronation of Goddess Meenakshi and her marriage to Lord Sundareswara, and the Journey of Lord Alagar from Kallazhagar temple in Alagar Koyil to Madurai. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)
Usually thousands of people gather to celebrate the festival in April, but of course this year, like so much, things were very different.
The Greater London Tamil Sangam chose Raise to receive funds donated as part of the virtual event this year. GLTS is a charity and an association for people of Tamil origin living in and around Greater London. The purpose of the charity is to help the public and community, to nurture the values of Tamil arts, music, culture and drama, and to promote social well being and support.
You can visit the association’s website at https://www.gltamilsangam.org/ and if you would like to mark Chithirai Thiruvizha 2020 with a donation to support NHS staff please go to their fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/greater-london-tamil-sangam-watford.
We are very grateful for the Tamil community’s support … at the time of writing some £1,000 has been donated directly and through JustGiving. Thank you.
