Jupiter School Advent Calendars

Pupils at Hemel’s Jupiter Community Free School today presented Raise with over 360 advent calendars, for distribution to children’s wards and children’s A&E services at West Hertfordshire’s hospitals (in Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead).

The pupils, all aged from 4 to 10 years, had been inspired by PTA committee member Laura Odell, whose son had received an advent calendar whilst at Watford General Hospital last year. Laura said that the gesture had made a huge difference to his spell on the wards and she wanted to do the same for others in 2019.

Pupils, families and local businesses pulled together to amass the collection of 364 advent calendars, which were handed over to Raise’s Charity Director David Head at a special school assembly.

David said “I was blown away when I walked into the hall and saw the huge number of calendars collected, and the amazing support for kids in hospital from the children at Jupiter. On the wards these will genuinely help, a hospital stay or visit at this time of year is never pleasant for a child; a small gift can make a big difference.

“Mind you, I didn’t expect to have to rope in our portering team and their truck to deliver the calendars to the wards. That’s testament to the hugely successful effort on the part of the school”.

School principal Neil Jones added “It was a fantastic response from our pupils and their families, and a real buzz to be able to present the hospital charity with so many gifts. Children always get a great deal out of taking part in charitable activities and this is a cause many of them can relate to even at a young age. Everyone that contributed should feel proud of the generous spirit amongst Jupiter pupils, I know I do”.
