Seated massages on wards and departments; a perfect way to help busy staff de-stress

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust employs over 5,000 people in its hospitals in Hemel Hempstead, St Alban’s City and Watford General, as well as its outpatient physiotherapy centre in Abbots Langley. We are enormously proud of them as, together, they care for nearly a million patients each year living not only in west Hertfordshire but as far afield as North London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and east Hertfordshire.

Staff are working under extreme pressure and many feel unable to stop and get any respite from a hectic day, particularly in clinical areas. So, at Raise, we are proud to support staff wellbeing initiatives. For example, in the run up to Wellfest in May 2022, staff were asked how best we can support their wellbeing and, without exception, every department requested massage treatments in the workplace.

Offering them seated massage treatments is a way of addressing their fatigue, not only giving staff some relaxation time during a massage and reducing any muscle tension they may have, but also improving morale. We were particularly keen to offer treatments to those working at night – a group who are less likely and less able to access any of the usual wellbeing activities.

The impact of this charitable support can be felt far and wide. Individual staff receiving the messages will return to work refreshed and rejuvenated, and this in turn has a positive impact on their patients and their colleagues around them.
